Schoepsdau’s Jazz Mass is one of the few mass compositions that consistently strive for an organic combination of composition and improvisation. The work is based on the English mass text, which is interpreted musically. The “New York Mass” appears in a variety of Jazz styles: The composer combines Swing passages and flowing Latin American rhythms with gripping funk and gospel elements to create a homogeneous whole.
