New York Mass - Partitur

Christoph Schoepsdau - Jazz

Schoepsdau’s “New York Mass” belongs to the few mass compositions which consistently strive towards an organic combination of composition and improvisation. It is based on the English text of the mass, which is subject to musical interpretation. “New York Mass” employs a great variety of styles. Thus the composer combines swinging jazz sections and flowing Latin rhythms with thrilling funk and gospel elements, creating an amazingly homogeneous work.

“Good work! - Christoph has done a remarkable job of bridging jazz elements and traditional sacred text. Especially the vocal writing is skilfully done using just as many of the jazz harmonic elements in the choral parts as necessary.”

Darmon Meader (New York Voices)

“In Schoepsdau’s oeuvre, there are authentic styles to be found: harmonically and rhythmically advanced jazz with improvisatory elements, and also pop ballads and gospel-like choral movements. Nothing comes across as forced, distorted, or stylistically incongruous. Schoepsdau has convincingly combined English-language sacred texts with jazz and pop styles.”

Matthias Becker (Arranger and Conductor)

“Christoph’s composition is so interesting and innovative.”

Michele Weir (Phil Mattson School for Vocal Jazz)
