Schoepsdau’s “New York Mass” belongs to the few mass compositions which consistently strive towards an organic combination of composition and improvisation. It is based on the English text of the mass, which is subject to musical interpretation. “New York Mass” employs a great variety of styles. Thus the composer combines swinging jazz sections and flowing Latin rhythms with thrilling funk and gospel elements, creating an amazingly homogeneous work.
